The Faces of Glaucoma campaign puts real people and their daily struggles with the disease in the spotlight.
This January, the eyes of the world are turning to glaucoma—a disease often called the silent thief of sight—as Bausch + Lomb (Vaughan, Ontario) and the Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) are teaming up to launch their second annual Faces of Glaucoma campaign.
As a part of Glaucoma Awareness Month, the initiative will spotlight real stories from diverse patients living with glaucoma—all while highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment.
By illuminating such intimate personal journeys, the campaign aims to go beyond just raising awareness, seeking to educate communities and inspire action in the fight to save sight worldwide.
“By casting a spotlight on the various faces of glaucoma, we hope to create a deeper understanding of the broad range of individuals impacted while reminding people that paying attention to their vision by visiting an eye care provider annually can help preserve their vision for life,” said Thomas Brunner, president & CEO of the Glaucoma Research Foundation.
“It’s estimated that half of people with glaucoma don’t even know they have it,” said Andrew Stewart, president of Global Pharmaceuticals and International Consumer at Bausch + Lomb. “In collaboration with Glaucoma Research Foundation, we aim to encourage people to take an active role in understanding and managing their risk, starting with seeing an eye doctor.”
Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness worldwide1, can impact anyone, regardless of race, age, or gender—a fact often misunderstood.
“While glaucoma is often thought of as an older person’s disease, it’s important to understand that it can impact anyone, regardless of race, age or gender. This year we build on our previous efforts by highlighting a new group of diverse patient stories to bring to life the many faces of glaucoma,” said Mr. Brunner.
In addition to raising awareness, Bausch + Lomb is supporting GRF’s fundraising efforts for the fourth year in a row with a dollar-for-dollar match, up to $20,000. Every donation will help advance GRF’s research to find a cure for glaucoma.
The Faces of Glaucoma campaign in January is here to remind us that behind every statistic is a person, a story, and a reason to keep pushing for a cure.
