ACUVUE Releases Daily Disposable Multifocal Toric Contact Lens

New lens offers a simplified option for patients managing both presbyopia and astigmatism

Johnson & Johnson Vision (New Jersey, United States) has launched ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day MULTIFOCAL for ASTIGMATISM, a daily disposable contact lens designed for patients with both astigmatism and presbyopia. It is now available in the United States and Canada.

OASYS MAX is the first daily disposable lens to combine astigmatic and presbyopic correction.

Two conditions, one lens

Astigmatism affects nearly 50% of the population, and presbyopia develops with age, creeping in as early as the mid-40s. For those with both, vision correction can become a patchwork of compromises, stacking readers over distance lenses or switching to reusable contacts.

ACUVUE’s new release aims to simplify astigmatism and presbyopia care with a daily disposable that addresses both needs at once.

Material science at work

The lens is made of Senofilcon A, a silicone hydrogel material used across the ACUVUE OASYS line. This material is known for its high oxygen transmissibility and comfortable wear profile. The reported Dk/t (oxygen permeability) is 121 x 10⁹, helping support corneal health by allowing adequate oxygen flow during wear.

The lens has a water content of 38%, allowing it to retain moisture without sacrificing breathability. This balance helps reduce end-of-day dryness, which is a frequent complaint among multifocal and toric lens wearers.

Technical specs and fitting

According to J&J, the BLINK STABILIZED® design helps minimize rotation with eye and head movement, which is especially important for toric lenses where axis misalignment can quickly degrade vision.

For presbyopic correction, the PUPIL OPTIMIZED design addresses variations in pupil size that occur naturally with age and refractive error. By tailoring the optical zone to the individual’s needs, this feature helps improve clear near, intermediate and distance vision.

Key tech takeaways

The lens is designed with a combination of four proprietary technologies:

  • BLINK STABILIZED Design maintains consistent lens positioning with eye and head movement
  • PUPIL OPTIMIZED Design adapts to varying pupil sizes across different ages and prescriptions
  • TearStable Technology helps maintain hydration for longer wear and reduce end-of-day dryness
  • OptiBlue Light Filter filters 60% of blue-violet light, the highest level currently available in a daily lens

In company trials, 95% of wearers reported clear vision during regular daily activities. Eighty-seven percent (87%) reported clarity while driving at night, and 92% said their eyes felt comfortable throughout the day.

Insights from industry

“This new lens was designed to help patients who struggle with multiple vision correction issues,” said Dr. Mark Wells in a company statement. “It allows them to experience the comfort and clarity of MAX.”

Peter Menziuso, Company Group Chairman for Vision at Johnson & Johnson, emphasized the product’s role within the company’s broader lens portfolio. “With these new products, we now have the first and only complete family of daily-disposable contact lenses,” he said.

The MAX family expands

ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day MULTIFOCAL for ASTIGMATISM is part of a growing product suite that also includes spherical and toric lenses. ACUVUE OASYS MAX 1-Day for ASTIGMATISM is expected to launch later this summer in North America, with both lenses rolling out to international markets throughout 2025 and beyond.

The product line now includes daily disposable lenses for spherical, multifocal and toric prescriptions, simplifying options for patients with varying visual needs.

What it means in the clinic

While the name is long, the concept is simple. For patients juggling multiple prescriptions, this lens could simplify fitting and reduce reliance on layered solutions. For clinicians, it may help fill a longstanding gap in toric and multifocal prescribing options, especially for daily wearers.

With no need for cleaning solutions or layered reading glasses, this single-lens solution could lighten the load, both in the clinic and in the contact lens drawer at home. By combining existing technologies in a daily lens format, this launch offers the promise of a simpler way forward for patients juggling both astigmatism and presbyopia.
